In the Season 3 premiere of This Is Us, “Nine Bucks,” Randall (Sterling K. Brown), Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Kevin (Justin Hartley) each celebrate their 38th birthday. It just so happens that newlyweds Kate and Toby (Chris Sullivan) get an appointment with their fertility doctor on her birthday. But when they sit down with the doctor they’re disappointed to learn that she won’t be able to take them on as patients. The doctor tells Kate, “At your weight, the chances of a successful pregnancy are very slim.”

Kate tells the doctor that they know all the risks but “we want to take our chances.” The doctor tries to explain that due to the medical/legal practice liability issues, “You’ll be hard-pressed to find anyone (in the medical professional) who will” be willing to take the chance. It’s a very emotional scene. Can Kate and Toby (who’s already depressed) be happy without starting a family? As actress Metz recently said in an interview, in Season 3, “we see Kate real have to “put on her big girl britches and really be there for her husband.” This Is Us airs Tuesdays at 9pm on NBC, right after The Voice.
