The title of The Unexpected Season 2 premiere episode, “Unsafe and Unplanned,” could have been the title of the whole show. Pregnant 16-year-old Chloe admits that she and her boyfriend Max “were young and dumb” and unsafe when it came to having sex. And 18-year-old pregnant cheerleader Emiley complains that her mother never spoke to her about sex before she lost her virginity. The big question underlying the show is will the teenager mothers learn from the decisions they made in the past. Will they make better decisions as mothers. On Season 2, McKayla, 17-year-old mother of 7-month-old Timmy, makes a big decision that breaks the hearts of her grandparents — her legal guardians since she was 5 because her mother Shannon had “a drug issue.”

At first, McKayla’s grandfather nervously warns her that she better not tell them that she’s pregnant again. (She’s not! Phew.) McKayla tells them that she wants to move in with her mother, who just had a baby too. “To me that’s a spit in the face,” says her grandfather. He admits that he doesn’t understand why she would want to do that. “Go visit her anytime you want,” he says. And then he gets choked up and tells her how much he’s going to miss seeing McKayla and Timmy (who he’s holding and kissing at that moment) every day. McKayla’s grandmother gets teary-eyed too but is a little more calm when she talks to McKayla. She wonders aloud if it’s the right move for Timmy. The Unexpected airs Sundays at 10pm on TLC, right after 90 Day Fiancé.
