On the Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta episode “Way Out of My Comfort Zone,” while Bridals by Lori consultant Melissa is tickled to work with her client, Miss America, newbie Becca works with Navy veteran Joan. In July 2010, Joan was injured while on deployment. She suffered a head injury, lost vision in her left eye and has reduced vision in her right eye as a result of her service. After five-and-a-half years of active duty, in November 2012, Joan medically retired from the Navy.
As Joan’s friend Miranda says, “The Navy was her dream. In an instant, it was stripped from her. It crushed her.” Joan is grateful today. “After having such rough experiences, it’s amazing to have things to look forward to,” says Joan, “and to have hopes and dreams again.” Joan is marrying her fiance Mike, currently active duty Navy, in three months. They want to get married before his next set of orders. Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta airs Saturdays at 8pm on TLC, right before Four Weddings.
