The Kawhi Leonard situation in San Antonio was too much for conspiracy theorists to pass up. There must be something wrong between Leonard and the Spurs, right? Why isn’t he playing? Here’s the non-conspiracy answer: Leonard is hurt. When he’s better, he’ll play. Not very exciting, right? Can sell much TV time telling that boring story. So “sources” started reporting about “turbulence” between Leonard and the Spurs. And Leonard, not feeling the need to address unsubstantiated rumors, didn’t answer the speculation — so it grew.
But the San Antonio Express-News reports that in meeting with reporters today, Leonard said he talks to Coach Gregg Popovich every day and that everybody is on the same page. Would he like to finish his career as a Spur? “Yeah. For sure,” Leonard replied. Spurs fans will be happy to hear that Leonard plans to be a lifer like Duncan, Ginobili and Parker, but even happier if Leonard plays this year. He’s played just nine games and none since January 13. Leonard says he expects to be back this season. “I am definitely better,” he says. “Feeling more comfortable.” Without Leonard, the Spurs have played well in the competitive Western Conference, but they are only an elite team with Leonard in the lineup.
