Actor, poet, artist, and general dude James Franco returns to Saturday Night Live to host the December 9 show. (Sza is the musical guest.) In the SNL promotional video “James Franco is a Natural” (see below), Franco walks down the stairs at the famous ice rink at 30 Rockefeller Center. Wearing a black denim jacket and matching black Levi’s jeans, Franco looks like he means business at the rink. The camera stays on Franco as he laces up his size 10 ice skates. But when his blades touch the ice, Franco nearly wipes out. With the help of a passerby, a little girl who gives him a push, Franco falls. Franco asks the appropriate rhetorical question, “Was that necessary?”
[Franco’s most recent book is the novel Actors Anonymous]
While Franco is lacing up his skates, the camera catches the actor’s wrist, on which he’s wearing a black bracelet with yellow lettering. It reads: “In the landscape of extinction, precision is next to godliness.” The quote is attributed to Samuel Beckett, the late Irish avant-garde novelist, playwright, and poet, who reached international fame with his play “Waiting For Godot,” and won a Nobel Prize in 1969. Beckett was actually a pretty good ice skater. Saturday Night Live airs Saturdays at 11:30pm on NBC.
