Kevin Spacey is reported to be seeking “evaluation and treatment” after actor Anthony Rapp’s sexual misconduct accusation against Spacey opened the doors for more actors to walk through with similar accusations. Actor Robert Cavazos said that at The Old Vic Theatre in London, where Spacey was the creative director for a dozen years “there are many of us who have a Kevin Spacey story.” Spacey’s publicist says the actor will take time away professionally to receive the aformentioned “evaluation and treatment.” Meanwhile The Old Vic is soliciting stories from others who had inappropriate encounters with Spacey during his time at the helm, including those who wish to remain anonymous. Cavazos recounted for People magazine how champagne was always involved in Spacey’s unwelcome meetings with young male actors. And that it was “more common to find Spacey at the bar of his theater, cornering whoever caught his attention.”
Champagne, the constant presence at the bar — these details echo a detail of Rapp’s story that said he believed Spacey was drunk at the time of his transgression. Spacey himself acknowledged the plausibility of Rapp’s story, while not verifying its truth. Spacey said the alleged incident would have transpired more than 30 years ago and that he didn’t remember it. “But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior,” Spacey wrote, before coming out as gay in the same Twitter apology to Rapp. Many celebrities have sought evaluation and treatment for sexual addictions, perhaps most notably Tiger Woods. Woods was also later revealed to need treatment for substance addiction. In Spacey’s case, nearly every story of his alleged predatory behavior comes with alcohol in the mix. In seeking evaluation and treatment, is the 58-year-old actor seeking treatment for more than his bad sexual conduct? Is there an alcohol part of the story? Rapp’s story gives us a drunk Spacey 34 years ago and the more recent stories also contain alcohol as a factor.
