The definition of apprentice is a person who learns a trade from another, so of course any impersonator is by definition an apprentice. So when Alec Baldwin won his 2017 Emmy for his comic portrayal of Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live, Trump’s apprentice — in a sense — finally won the coveted award. (Trump’s popular shows The Apprentice and Celebrity Apprentice never nabbed the little statue, much to the president’s oft-expressed chagrin.)
Baldwin took the stage to accept the award and acknowledged the fact. “I suppose I should say, ‘At long last, Mr. President, here is your Emmy,'” Baldwin said to a roar from the crowd. Baldwin went on to thank SNL honcho Lorne Michaels, the writers and the cast, making sure to mention Kate McKinnon, who played (apprenticed, that is) Hillary Clinton on SNL.
