A few days before reappearing on The Big Bang Theory as himself (September 24), Sheldon’s idol Stephen Hawking took to social media to encourage children (ages 13 to 18) to make 3-minute videos about a significant idea in science or maths. If they submit it to the Breakthrough Junior Challenge, they have a chance of winning the grand prize — a $250,000 college scholarship.
As Hawking writes: “The future of discovery – and of humanity – depends on young people with a passion for science.” Deadline to enter the Breakthrough Junior Challenge is Sunday, October 1. Submissions are judged “on the student’s ability to communicate complex scientific ideas in engaging, illuminating, and imaginative ways.” The Breakthrough Prizes were founded by Google co-founder Sergey Brin and now his ex-wife Anne Wojcicki, Yuri and Julia Milner, and Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan.
