Herbie Russ is the long-haired saxophonist competing on America’s Got Talent, Season 12. Herbie made it to the Judge Cuts, but will he have enough to advance to the Live Shows? If it was contest based on personality alone, Herbie would be a shoo-in. A graduate of “Luv U”, Herbie describes his profession as “paying the rent with my rock.”
As a man who has lived in homeless shelters in the past, Herbie also volunteers his time singing “Amazing Grace” on the streets of Detroit as “Homeless Herbie.” While wearing soiled pants and pushing a shopping cart, he is what videographer Tom Mabe calls a “bait bum.” In the video below, performing as “Homeless Herbie”, Herbie collected $640 from passersby. Herbie took that money and bought toiletries (deodorant, toothpaste), underwear and socks and distributed to those who are living on the streets. America’s Got Talent airs Tuesdays at 8pm on NBC.
