On The Real Housewives of New York City episode “Return of the Berzerkshires,” before the ladies head up to the Berkshires for Dorinda’s birthday getaway weekend, Tinsley Mortimer gets a visit from her mother Dale Tatum Mercer. The interior designer from Richmond, Virginia has been compared to the opinionated Designing Women character Julia Sugarbaker — portrayed by the late Dixie Carter.

Dale Tatum Mercer was the first wife of George Riley Mercer, Jr., Tinsley’s father. He became a millionaire as a principal in Mercer Rug and Carpet Company, the real estate investment firm George-Marshall Corporation, and GII Corporation. He died in March 2015 at the age of 68. The Real Housewives of New York City airs Wednesdays at 9pm on Bravo.
