My 600-lb Life featured 40-year-old Lupe Samano Donovan in a 2016 episode. Lupe was obese by the age of 6 (100 lbs.), soon after her father left the family. Her mother had a nervous breakdown, started using drugs and then went to prison. Lupe was raised by her grandmother. She hasn’t weighed less than 550 pounds since she was 15 years old. Due to her weight and health problems (diabetes, lymphedema), Lupe was bedridden for nearly 10 years. Since appearing on My 600-lb Life and having the gastric bypass surgery (performed by Dr. Nowzaradan), she has lost more than 300 lbs. She needs to lose even more in order to qualify for skin removal surgery.
By her side during her weight-loss journey has been her husband/caregiver Gilbert Donovan. Just weeks before the second episode airs, Gilbert announced via Twitter that he’s been working out, weightlifting three times a day. He also asked his “Twitter family” to pray for him and Lupe as they’re “going through it.” My 600-lb Life airs new episode on Wednesdays at 8pm on TLC.
