Film director John Singleton (Boyz n the Hood, 2 Fast 2 Furious) is promoting his new cop drama on BET, Rebel. The protagonist, Rebecca “Rebel” Knight”, is an African-American police officer in Oakland, California who seeks revenge after her brother is killed by cops. When reprimanded for punching a fellow cop, Rebel announces, “We ain’t family, this is a job.” Singleton refers to the actress who plays Rebel as his “newest star.”

Rebel is portrayed by Danielle Moné Truitt. She’s known for her theater work — her stage credits include Dreamgirls, In the Heights, Aida, A Raisin in the Sun, and Hair, among others. Fun facts about Truitt – she runs a ministry with her husband at The Living Room in Van Nuys, is the mother of two young sons, and provided the voice of Princess Georgia in the 2009 Disney film The Princess and the Frog. Rebel premieres Tuesday, March 28 on BET.
