The People Icons TV special Heroes & Survivors tells stories of real-life survival from real-life people, including a heroic mother who lost both of her legs while saving her two children in two separate incidents during tornadoes that happened 15 minutes apart. That may be the most harrowing tale on the People Icons, but another survivor — Lauren Scruggs Kennedy — will also be interviewed. Her story has a happy ending — incredibly — but it’s hard to imagine even as you hear her tell it.

In 2011, 28-year-old fashion blogger Lauren Scruggs Kennedy was exiting a private plane in Dallas when she was struck by a spinning airplane propeller and lost a hand and one of her eyes. She was in the hospital for three weeks and for the next year Lauren was in physical therapy every day. After receiving a prosthetic arm and eye, she met one of People Magazine’s Hottest Bachelors of 2008, E! News co-host Jason Kennedy. They married in 2014. People Icons airs Tuesdays at 10pm on ABC.
