In the Season 1 finale episode of This Is Us, it’s the night of Rebecca’s (Mandy Moore‘s) first big gig with the band on the road. Before she gets on stage, she calls home. With no one there — Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) heads to Cleveland to make things right with his wife – she leaves a message saying that she misses Jack and wishes he could be with her, or that she was there at home with him. She also has a conversation with Ben, her former boyfriend who’s in the band (vocals, keyboards).
Ben is portrayed by Sam Trammell. He’s known for his roles on True Blood (Sam Merlotte), and in the films The Fault in Our Stars (Michael), All Mistakes Buried (which he co-wrote and co-produced), I Am Wrath with John Travolta, and Imperium opposite Toni Collette and Daniel Radcliffe. Trammell was nominated for a Tony Award for his role in the 1998 Broadway revivial of Eugene O’Neill’s “Ah, Wilderness.” This Is Us airs Tuesdays at 9pm on NBC.
