Dateline investigates two double homicides that haunted the city of Omaha, Nebraska for years. In 2008, Dr. William Hunter’s 11-year-old son and his housekeeper Shirlee Sherman were found stabbed to death in the Hunter home. In 2013, Dr. Roger Brumback and his wife Mary were found brutally murdered in their home. In October 2016, Anthony Garcia, a medical resident fired by Drs. Hunter and Brumback in 2001, was found guilty of the four murders and now faces the death penalty.
During the death penalty proceedings, Garcia has remained silent even when addressed by the judge in court. The judge ordered Garcia to a state psychiatric hospital which will likely delay his death penalty proceedings. Sherman’s son Jeff believes Garcia is “playing the system.” Garcia’s attorneys say their client hasn’t talked to them for months, not even through the trial. Attorney Motta would like to remind the public that Garcia has been in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day for 3½ years. Motta told Omaha World-Herald: “I would challenge any of you to try that for 3½ years and see how you would come out on the other end. I’d hazard to guess you probably wouldn’t be in too good a shape.” Dateline NBC airs Fridays at 9pm on NBC.
