Snapchat has opened its Snapchat Spectacles store — and now anybody can get a hold of the $130 camera glasses — the Snap Spectacles — that make real life and digital life even more indistinguishable. While social media remains the buzz of business, Snap founder and CEO Evan Spiegel recently said that Snap — about to have an enormous IPO — is at heart a “camera company.” That puts Snap’s future as much in the hardware/device business as the software/social media business — a choice Steve Jobs made for Apple, to name one illustrious predecessor.
Snap delivers big time on Spiegel’s promise to be a camera company by introducing online sales for the Snap Spectacles at Spectacles.com. Previously the only way to get a pair of Snapchat’s Spectacles was to be lucky and have one of those yellow Snapchat vending machines — called Snapbots — appear in your town. Or you could live in NYC and visit the now-closed Spectacle pop-up store. (Or you could pay over $200 and get a pair of Snap Spectacles from enterprising Ebay sellers, a secondary market the Spectacles store will likely crush.) Now anyone anywhere can order $130 Snapchat Spectacles from Spectacles.com right now.
