The Dateline NBC episode ‘Over the Edge’ tells the story of Toni Henthorn who fell to her death while hiking with her husband Harold Henthorn in Rocky Mountain National Park in 2012. Harold Henthorn was found guilty of her murder. Prosecutors say his motive was the collect the $4.7 million from an insurance policy he had taken out on his wife. They also believe he murdered his first wife Lynn Henthorn in 1995, again staging it to look like a freak accident.
At Henthorn’s trial, park rangers testified that the site where Toni fell is an “obscure area.” There’s no trail leading to it. One ranger hiked to the spot and reported “To me it was surprising people would go down there.” According to CBS4 in Denver, Toni Henthorn was reportedly wearing her wedding ring while hiking “but when rangers found her body, the diamond was missing from the ring.” It was never found. Dateline NBC airs Fridays at 9pm.
