The American Greed episode ‘The Phantom Fraudster of Broadway’ features Mark Hotton. The former stockbroker from Long Island told the producers of Rebecca, a Broadway musical in the works, that he could raise millions for the show which was struggling financially. But he needed to be paid in advance — paid a lot. Turns out his investors didn’t exist.
[Rebecca is based on the novel by Daphne du Maurier which was made into a film by Alfred Hitchcock in 1940 starring Joan Fontaine and Laurence Olivier.]
In 2014, Hotton pleaded guilty and was sentenced to nearly three years in prison. Rebecca the musical has yet to go up on the Great White Way. American Greed airs Thursdays at 10pm on CNBC.
