Kayla Mueller traveled to Turkey in December 2012 to work as a humanitarian worker with the international aid agency Support to Life. In August 2013, while driving to a Doctors Without Borders hospital in Syria, the 26-year-old was taken hostage by ISIL. She was tortured, forced into slave labor, and raped before she was executed by “Jihadi John.” ABC 20/20 is airing its investigation of Mueller’s captivity and death which includes never before seen video of Mueller while held hostage and an interview with Mueller’s parents.

ABC 20/20 posted a sneak peek of their investigative report on Facebook, and a number of Americans are voicing their opinions. Karen Wil wrote: “Kayla understood the risks of going to Syria. That’s why civilian spouses of our military personnel aren’t allowed in the region.” Kecia Lee wrote: Kayla “should never have been where she was” and that “her parents should have known the consequences.” Eric Miranda wrote: “Stories like this one should serve as a reminder that no American should ever venture to that area of the world. Unfortunately her humanitarianism led to her own death.” And Ellen Fern wrote: Help people in this country!
