Annie McCann was 16 years old when she ran away from her home in Alexandria, Virginia, on Halloween 2008. Two days later, her body was found outside of a housing project in Baltimore. Police considered her death a suicide – caused by McCann having ingested a fatal amount of lidocaine, an ingredient in Bactine, a topical antiseptic. McCann had a 5 oz. bottle of Bactine with her to spray on her recently pierced ears. But McCann’s parents, Dan and Mary Jane McCann, believe she was murdered.

Bayer, the manufacturer of Bactine, claims that the antiseptic “could not have killed her at the amounts found in her body.” And the person who embalmed McCann’s body at the funeral home, Diana Downey, wrote: “Our staff at the funeral home always believed that Annie was raped (sodomized) and beaten.” The McCanns have requested the rape kit from the police more than once but their requests have been denied. The McCanns have hired a private detective who believes someone already in jail might have information about who really killed Annie. ABC 20/20 correspondent Deborah Roberts goes to the prison with the McCanns to talk to the inmate. ABC 20/20 airs Fridays at 10pm.
