Wildman Len Dykstra — a baseball legend — has always been a great interview. But Howard Stern fans think the battery of Stern-Dykstra this Tuesday compared — for sheer nerve and glory — with the ’86 Mets themselves. Stern wanted to call Leny “Nails” — his well-earned, hard-ass nickname. Dykstra knew better than to deny him. Then Dykstra went on to tell crazy story after crazy NSFW story. Asking the umps about the “dating scene” — Dykstra calls it something else — got him some good calls at the plate, he said. Then he got started talking about the life. And Stern encouraged and encouraged him.

Dykstra’s charm worked with umps, but it didn’t work with everyone. He spent time in prison for grand theft auto and some financial shenanigans — he just got off probation. In prison he got all his teeth knocked out by a guard who didn’t like his singing. Dykstra delivered the crude scoop on sex on the road in the MLB too — a home run subject with Stern, of course. Dykstra talked about hanging with Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson, Charlie Sheen. Dykstra said he’s beaten his many addictions and, at 53, is back in the game. Steroids and HGH are in his past, he said. But back when Dykstra took them he shot himself “in the ass 3 times a week” and he had “muscles in his face.” Fans loved it, as the comments below attest.
