Actress Blake Lively stars in The Shallows, a film about a surfer named Nancy who is hunted down by a great white shark. Nancy shouldn’t be surfing alone but as Lively says Nancy is on a self-exploration journey after her mother dies “and surfing was something that she and her mother shared – it was something that brought them close together.” Nancy sets out to find an elusive beach that her mother always talked about. That’s when she gets in the crosshairs of the shark.
At a red carpet event in Cannes in May, Lively spoke about the subject matter of The Shallows. She told ScreenSlam (see video below): “What’s interesting about it, and the title [The Shallows], is because of global warming, sharks are pushed closer and closer to the shallow water. We always depict sharks as these villains, but here we are: we kill so many more sharks than sharks ever killed humans.” The Shallows was written by Anthony Jaswinski, whose next film Satanic stars Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland. The Shallows will be released June 29.
