Warner Bros. is betting heavily on the success of its super-villain tale Suicide Squad. The much-anticipated comic-book movie stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto, and the studio is hoping it will be a success after the terrible reviews and disappointing returns on Batman v Superman, which will creep past $800 million at the box office and technically be profitable, even though by Hollywood standards the movie is a bomb. Currently undergoing reshoots — reportedly because it’s not funny enough, although Jai Courtney denies that — Suicide Squad has released a new trailer designed to get fanboys even more excited.
The trailer shows the formation of the squad, an expendable rag-tag bunch of mutants and supervillains who will be tasked with doing dirty work for the Government, possibly against Superman himself (continuing a theme from Batman v Superman). “I want to build a team of some very bad people who I think can do some good,” says Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). Cue Grace singing “You Don’t Own Me” as we see the squad’s members doing what they do best — causing mayhem — before Sweet sings “Ballroom Blitz” (question: are any of DC’s fans even old enough to remember Sweet?). There is a brief glimpse of Batman (Ben Affleck) and we get to see more of the Joker (Jared Leto). Suicide Squad rampages into theaters in August.
