In a sign that Hollywood has just given up and has resorted to just throwing everything against the wall and seeing what sticks, comes news that there is going to be a Jump Street/Men in Black crossover movie. 21 Jump Street (and its imaginatively titled sequel 22 Jump Street) concerns young-looking cops (Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill) going undercover in high school to catch drug dealers. Men in Black (and its sequels) concerns Will Smith‘s attempts to stop Tommy Lee Jones from using his gruff alien powers to destroy Earth. (Or something like that. It’s been a while. I know it involved aliens.) One movie is a comedy, allegedly. The other is science-fiction. Put them together, says Hollywood, and presto! Comic sci-fi!
And you want to know the worst part? The new movie is going to be called MIB 23, because apparently making a film’s title look like a vanity license plate is a thing. MIB 23 is not the only ridiculous crossover idea of the week. Warner Bros. is planning a Hanna-Barbera Cinematic Universe, because what the world really needs is to see Scooby Doo, Fred Flintstone, and Yogi Bear get together and do … something (I bet it will involve foiling an evil — dare I say wacky? — plot by Dastardly and Muttley.)
