In The Simpsons episode “The Burns Cage,” while Bart gets involved in the school production of “Casablanca,” Smithers gets upset with Mr. Burns’ lack of affection towards him. Homer’s attempt to play matchmaker, to find Smithers a boyfriend leads to a conversation with actor and gay rights activist George Takei – who is best known for his role as Hikaru Sulu on Star Trek.
This isn’t Takei’s first appearance on The Simpsons. It will be his fifth but his first time playing himself. Last time Takei appeared he voiced a sushi chef in the 2013 episode “What Animated Women Want.” Prior to that he voiced a waiter in the 2001 episode “A Hunka Hunka Burns in Love”; game show host Wink in the 1999 episode “Thirty Minutes Over Tokyo”; and Akira in the 1991 episode “One Fish, Two Fish, Blowfish, Blue Fish.” The Simpsons airs Sundays at 8pm on FOX.
