Beyonce used her HBO platform to drop Lemonade, letting the album fly after the premiere of a short film about the music ran on the cable king Saturday night. The album presents a pissed-off Bey, Queen of her own rage but not her man, going so far as to come clean to fans that “Tonight I regret the night I put that ring on.” It’s a ferocious atmosphere she creates on film and Bey testifies on Lemonade that “I break chains all by myself.” But ultimately this haunted reality show of a record seems resigned to sticking it out — resigned to the imperfection of love, or whatever it is she has with her business partner and husband Jay Z.
Speaking of chains — golden ones, perhaps, but comme these tracks are streaming only on TIDAL, the pricey “for artists” streaming service headlined by Jay Z. Beyonce is linked to Jay Z by more than just that regretted ring and their child together — she’s probably the most important artist listed among the founding TIDAL troupe: Alicia Keys, Arcade Fire (Win Butler and Regine Chassagne), Beyonce, Calvin Harris, Chris Martin, Daft Punk, Deadmau5, Jack White, Jason Aldean, J. Cole, Kanye West, Madonna, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Shawn “JAY Z” Carter and Usher.
