Six months after 21-year-old Texas A&M student Jamie Hart was found murdered, another petite co-ed was attacked in College Station. Kristin Lancaster was 19 years old when Ynobe Katron Matthews attacked her in her apartment in October 1999. When someone came to her door, he told her to be quiet and left the room. Instead she screamed “call the police” and escaped. Matthews was able to escape too. Six months later, he attacked and killed another A&M student, Carolyn Casey. He kidnapped her, sexually assaulted her and strangled her before setting parts of her on fire. Matthews was convicted in Casey’s death and sentenced to death. He was 27 when he was executed in January 2004.
Dateline NBC’s Andrea Canning, who interviewed Lancaster about her assault, says of Lancaster: “I absolutely believe that Kristin saved herself — with her stomping, yelling, screaming and the words she used with him.” Dateline NBC airs Fridays at 10pm.
