Sabine Musil-Buehler ran Haley’s Motel on Florida’s Anna Maria Island with her estranged husband Tom Buehler. While Sabine was traveling in Europe in 2005, Tom hired William Cumber to work at the motel. When Sabine returned from her trip she met Cumber for the first time. According to the Herald Tribune, “That same day Cumber was arrested for arson.” During Cumber’s time in prison, Musil-Buehler and Cumber became pen pals.
Upon Cumber’s release from prison in October 2008, he moved in with Musil-Buehler at an apartment on Magnolia Avenue. In November, Musil-Buehler was reported as missing. In October 2015, Cumber confessed to choking Musil-Buehler to death and burying her near the motel. Dateline NBC will air its investigative report on February 19 at 10pm.
