Isaac “Ike” Perlmutter is the CEO of Marvel. He and his wife Laura just donated $1 million to Donald Trump’s Iowa event, which Trump hosted instead of attending Fox News’ latest Republican presidential debate. The million bucks is big news — it will be “dispersed among the 22 different veterans organizations that partnered with Trump for the event.” But it’s just half of the Marvel-made money that found its way into another Republican candidate’s pockets. In October, the New York Times reported that Laura Perlmutter donated $2 million to a Super PAC supporting another Republican candidate, Marco Rubio.
Prior to becoming CEO of Marvel in 2005, Perlmutter co-owned Toy Biz with Avi Arad (now Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer). Toy Biz was the exclusive manufacturer for Marvel toys in the early 1990s. In 1996 when Marvel filed for bankruptcy, Toy Biz acquired the comics business. While Perlmutter has a reputation for being “miserly,” Marvel prospered and started to make serious money when it begin financing its own movies, including Iron Man and Thor. According to Forbes, Perlmutter is worth $3.7 billion.
