Leslie Haywood of Charleston, South Carolina likes to barbeque with her husband. One day, when he delivered her the wrong piece of meat (it was the spicy one instead of the mild one), she came up with a solution to the common misidentified meat grilling problem. She created a line of charms to be inserted in meat prior to grilling – Grill Charms. Haywood went on Shark Tank to pitch her business – a set of 6 Grill Charms retailed for $19.95 – and made a deal with investor Robert Herjavec ($50k for 20 percent).

After the show, Haywood landed a licensing agreement with Fox Run Brands to manufacture and distribute Grill Charms. Barbeque lovers can still buy the Grill Charms Steak Collection on Amazon (see above, a set of 6 sells for less than $10) but her popular Spicy, Charmed Life, and Pink Collection have sold out. Haywood will discuss the difficult decisions she’s had to make as an entrepreneur on the Shark Tank spinoff, Beyond the Tank, which airs Thursdays at 8pm on ABC.
