Singers upon whom the spotlight has dimmed a bit — singers named Braxton, for instance — have taken to reality TV to freshen their brands and amp their exposure. And it works, at the expense of whatever privacy the stars one hoped to maintain. But when the spotlight is still operating at peak shine, pop stars can make different — and likely more profitable choices. Enter Nicki Minaj, the rapper and pop sensation who will have a show named after her — Nicki — on ABC Family. It’s all about Nicki, but Nicki Minaj won’t be the star (though expect her to appear). You won’t get to go inside her kitchen and bedroom with her, either, snooping around and stargazing. Because only the fictional, recreated kitchens and bedrooms of her youth will be on Nicki.
That’s because with Nicki, Minaj is bringing a narrative arc to her story — it’s a scripted series. The title character will be played by young Ariana Neal (Fruitvale Station), embodying Nicki as a young prodigy searching for her breakthrough moment while dealing with growing up. For all those who would rather get into adult Nicki’s bedroom, she still has Instagram — and she’s not shy, as you can see:
