Exploding Kittens — the card game for “people who are into kittens and explosions and laser beams and sometimes goats” — raised nearly $9 million in a Kickstarter campaign at the beginning of 2015, getting contributions from just under 220,000 backers. That’s a record number of backers on Kickstarter, and they made Exploding Kittens the #1 most-funded game in Kickstarter history. Yet the market was not saturated, not by a long shot.
With the holiday shopping season in full swing, Exploding Kittens has reached the #2 bestseller spot at Amazon in the Toys & Games
category. The card game is second only to another card game, the cultural phenomenon known as Cards Against Humanity
, which can raise money without even sending its customers anything. Exploding Kittens is just twenty bucks, can be played by 2-5 players age 7 and up. Invented by Elan Lee and Shane Small, with extraordinary illustrations by The Oatmeal.
