The University of St. Thomas (Minnesota) Tommies will face the University of Mount Union (Ohio) Purple Raiders in the 43rd NCAA Division III football championship game, commonly known as the Stagg Bowl. Both teams come into the contest after huge wins Saturday against Linfield College (Oregon) and Wisconsin-Whitewater respectively. The teams are experienced not only with each other, but in championship games as well.
This will be Mount Union’s 11th consecutive appearance in the Stagg Bowl, with their last win coming against St. Thomas in the 2012 Championship game. A victory this year will be their 12th National Championship. St. Thomas has not been back since 2012 which was their first and only appearance, but along with Mount Union and Wisconsin-Whitewater, St. Thomas is the only other team in 11 years to play for the Championship. When asked about the chance to avenge their 28-10 loss to the Purple Raiders in 2012, St. Thomas coach Glenn Caruso said “We don’t deal in hate or revenge. That’s not us, that’s not who we are.” The Stagg Bowl will take place in Salem, VA at 7pm ET on Friday, December 18 (ESPNU).
