In the Grey’s Anatomy episode “Something Against You,” there’s a tense moment in the pre-operation room between Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), Dr. Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) and Callie’s resident girlfriend Dr. Penny Blake (Samantha Sloyan). When Meredith assigns Penny to sit with a skull donor, Callie says, “What, you just want her to sit there with the donor and think about Derek?” Before Meredith can respond, Penny interrupts and tells Callie to “shut up and stay out of it.”

The minute Callie walks out of the room, Meredith reverts to telling Penny what she needs to do. Penny finally sticks up for herself and says, “Don’t go easy on me. Don’t expect less. Treat me like you would any other resident. Treat me worse, I don’t care. Hate me. Yell at me. I can handle it. I will handle it. You told me not to quit and I didn’t. If you can’t…please let me go.” It’s a scene reminiscent of the epic Cool Hand Luke scene where Paul Newman (Luke) yells: “Come on. Love me, hate me, kill me, anything. Just let me know it.” Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 8pm on ABC.
