Dateline NBC’s Saturday Night Mystery episode “The Mystery of Bridle Path” starts with Carol Kennedy talking on the phone with her mother Ruth. They spoke every night. But on the evening of July 2, 2008, while talking to her mother, the 52-year-old Carol yelled, “Oh no!” and then the phone went dead. Ruth called the police who when they arrived at the Prescott, Arizona home, found Carol had been brutally beaten to death with a golf club.
Kennedy’s ex-husband, stockbroker Steven DeMocker, was the prime suspect. They were going through a costly, contentious divorce and DeMocker’s infidelities were well-known. According to CBS News, at one point Carol said Steve had 17 mistresses. Three months after Kennedy’s death, DeMocker was charged with Carol’s murder and eventually convicted of killing her although prosecutors had no DNA, eyewitnesses, blood or a confession that tied DeMocker directly to the crime. In 2014, DeMocker was sentenced to life in prison. Dateline NBC will air its episode “The Mystery of Bridle Path” on November 14 at 8pm.
