Julie Gonzales, wife of an FBI Agent Arthur Gonzales for 18 years, was found lying dead on the kitchen floor of her family’s Virginia home in 2013. She was shot four times. It has taken three trials and two years to figure out what happened to Gonzales that day. Dateline NBC’s Dennis Murphy reports: “There were accusation of lies, a cover-up, and an obsession that overwhelmed all bounds of decency and common sense.”
Julie Gonzales’ husband Art Gonzales is now facing his third trial. His first two trials ended in hung juries. Now a judge will decide his fate. Julie had moved out of the house but when she showed up at the house unexpectedly, prosecutors say she discovered underwear that belonged to Arthur’s girlfriend which would jeopardize his custody deal. (Arthur was given primary custody of their two sons.) Arthur Gonzales claims that Julie came at him with a kitchen knife and he shot her (four times) in self-defense. Julie’s father says the knife was planted by Arthur. After the hung juries, the murder charge was lowered to voluntary manslaughter. Arthur Gonzales was found not guilty in July 2015. Dateline NBC will air Murphy’s report, “The Agent’s Wife,” on Friday, October 2 at 9pm. It’s a two-hour special.
