Dirk Nowitzki let it be known through Twitter that the Mavs locker room is wondering who’d win a 40-yard dash between the 37-year-old Dirk and fellow sports oldster (and fellow surefire Hall-of-Famer) Peyton Manning of the Denver Broncos. This is good news and bad news for the Mavs. The good part is that the team is relaxed and buoyant heading into the season, if the debate mood is so light. The bad news is this is a unfortunate time for the comparison: Manning is having a difficult year statistically. Yet maybe even that’s good. The Mavericks would love to have a struggling Nowitzki this year and still be undefeated — like Manning’s Broncos — almost halfway through the season.

The 40-yard dash results would likely be a Nowitzki win. Maybe that’s another reason Dirk un-self-consciously put it out there. Nowitzki customarily runs 90 feet and back again — his game and his position are simply more sprint-oriented than Manning’s. (He’s a classic pocket passer.) However, given the demands of his position, Manning would surely be the favorite running a 10-yard dash backwards.
Had this debate the other day in the locker room: Who wins a 40 yard dash between me and Peyton Manning???
