Amy Schumer came out guns blazing on Saturday Night Live, and even though these were metaphorical guns, she killed. Skewering the irreconcilable position of Second Amendment stalwarts ensuring a legal permissiveness that leaves Americans unnecessarily vulnerable to random acts of (literally) insane gun violence, Schumer — one of America’s most popular performers at the moment — did a satirical ad on SNL that probably made Jon Stewart miss his old job at The Daily Show. (Guns were, to his great lament, a favorite — and consistent — topic for Stewart to tackle.)
In a style that might best be called “high preposterousness” the SNL skit featured guns being present at great significant moments in people’s live — childbirth, romantic moments, etc. The incongruity of the weapons drove home the less-than-central role guns really play in most people’s day-to-day lives. “They unite us, comfort us, bring us strength. Guns — we’re here to stay,” intoned the voiceover. But Schumer isn’t a star for her politics, funny as she can make them. She remembered to hammer the Kardashians, too. The SNL episode is getting high marks from critics and fans.
