The Lifetime TV movie Ungodly Acts is based on a true story. The Melissa character is based on Bethany Deaton, wife of a charismatic Christian leader, Tyler Deaton. Bethany was 27-years-old when she was found dead in her car with a plastic bag over her head. Her death was considered a suicide until her friend — one of Tyler’s followers, Micah Moore — confessed that he had killed Bethany on Tyler’s orders. Tyler was never charged with the death of his young wife but after Micah’s confession (whether it was true or not), more of Tyler’s followers came forward with details regarding Tyler’s secret life which included homosexual relationships.
