The Lifetime TV movie Ungodly Acts is based on a true story. The Melissa character (Megan Parks) is based on Bethany Deaton, the 27-year-old wife of charismatic Christian prayer group leader, Tyler Deaton (“Daniel,” Brant Daugherty). In 2012, Bethany’s body was found dead in her car with a plastic bag over her head. It was thought a suicide until her friend, Micah Moore, a member of her husband’s prayer group, confessed to killing Bethany. Micah said Tyler made him do it after he and other members of the group had engaged in a series of sexual assaults on Bethany.

Moore was arrested but the first-degree murder charge was dropped in 2014. Moore’s DNA was not found on the bag, and the suicide note Bethany left was written by her. Moore recanted his confession saying it “came as a result of an exorcism.” Ungodly Acts will premiere on Lifetime on September 19 at 8pm. It will air again on September 20 at 12am and 3pm.
