Brandon Wegher has known he was good at playing football since he was a little kid. “Since playing tackle football, I was the best around,” says Wegher. “I was always the fastest, the biggest, the strongest kid.” That kid turned into a running back at the University of Iowa. But his dreams for playing in the NFL got derailed. He ended up playing at four different colleges including Oklahoma University, Iowa Western Community College, and Morningside College (also in Iowa). Wegher was drinking, using drugs. He eventually lost his love for the game.

What turned Wegher around was becoming a dad. “When I became a father, it changed me for the better,” he says. Now 24-years-old, Wegher is reaching for the NFL stars again. Although he’s considered a long shot, he’s currently an undrafted rookie with the Carolina Panthers. So far, so good. In the preseason opener at Buffalo, Wegher made a 42-year touchdown catch. On September 8, he made the 53-man roster. Wegher will be one of eight players featured in the NFL Network series NFL: Undrafted which premieres on September 22 (Tuesdays at 8pm). Episodes will be reshown after every Thursday Night Football postgame show. CBS will air a sneak peek of NFL: Undrafted on September 16 at 10pm.
