In the original version of the classic story, Dr. Jekyll is the more desirable guy — that Mr. Hyde can’t be trusted. But in a San Francisco sequel that 49ers running back Carlos (Mr.) Hyde started authoring last week, Mr. Hyde is the all-conquering hero. Hyde’s opening game had the whole Bay Area saying Jekyll who? Screw Jekyll, we love Hyde.
But the Carlos Hyde in the first half of this week’s 49ers contest against the Steelers bore no resemblance to the Hyde of Week One, who ran for 168 yards. Hyde coughed up a momentous fumble that resulted in a Steelers touchdown. 14 carries for 43 yards was all Hyde could deliver as the 49ers struggled to score (and struggled to stop the Pittsburgh offense). Hyde had to come out in the second half and is being evaluated for a possible concussion.
