IndiGo just placed one of the biggest aircraft orders in Airbus history, agreeing to purchase 250 Airbus A320neo jets. That adds to the 280 aircraft that IndiGo has already purchased from Airbus, bringing the total to 530 planes.
So who is IndiGo? The upstart airline was founded in 2008 by Rahul Bhalia and Rakesh Gangwal. (Gangwal was once CEO of US Airlines.) India is the next frontier for air travel in the opinion of most industry analysts. Increased urbanization, an expanding business landscape and better standards of living make discount air travel attractive to an increasing number of Indians. IndiGo is owned by InterGlobe Enterprises, which also holds large stakes in hospitality, logistics and delivery operations.
