As Roger Federer went gently into that good quarterfinal, Novak Djokovic had to rage against the dying of the light at Wimbledon. But even the great Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, from whom these descriptions are loosely borrowed, would have a hard time describing the blazing glory of Federer’s All England Club run so far. The seven-time Wimbledon champion has not lost a service game since the fortnight began.
Federer has served 58 games at Wimbledon without dropping one. The latest victim to stare and watch as Federer serves flew by was Roberto Bautista — downed without sweat, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2. Federer is the only player, men’s or women’s side, not to have dropped a service game. Gilles Simon will get a look at Federer’s serve next, in the quarterfinals.
