A beautiful bunch of great musicians who love Lynyrd Skynyrd just as much as Skynyrd loved Alabama got together last year to honor the southern rock icon with a musical tribute. That concert — featuring Cheap Trick, Trace Adkins, Alabama, Gregg Allman, Blackberry Smoke, Charlie Daniels, Peter Frampton, Gov’t Mule, Warren Haynes, John Hiatt and more — was turned into a 2 CD/DVD set that’ll be released July 24.
The album is called One More for the Fans — a play on the classic Skynyrd double album One More For From the Road, that featured the indelible version of “Free Bird” that’s become a part of rock legend. (“What song is it you wanna hear?”) Lynyrd Skynyrd — a joyous band marked by tragedy — famously and playfully took their name from the bandmembers’ high school gym teacher, Leonard Skinner.
