The startup CEO who cleaned coffee mugs taught Netflix founder Reed Hastings a valuable lesson — sort of. Back when Hastings was fresh out of Stanford, he worked at a startup where he’d often find coffee mugs he’d left dirty on his desk clean in the morning. Arriving early one day, he saw the CEO cleaning them. Why? Hastings asked. “It was the one thing I could do for you,” replied the CEO. “You do so much for the company.”
Was that a good thing? Hastings says it built a bond between him and the CEO. But then again, if that’s all the CEO can do for you — is that the right CEO for the gig? The startup didn’t go so well. Hastings’ subsequent endeavors did. Business Insider put together the video below.
