Go Aunt Abby! comes the cheer, but it’s the cheer with no words — only screeches — that’s the height of excitement. That’s Jax below, who’s cheering on Aunt Abby for tonight’s World Cup match-up between the US National Team and Nigeria. Aunt Abby happens to be Abby Wambach, who has scored more goals than any other soccer player in history. Wambach is leading the US team, which expects to advance to the knockout round — win or lose against underdog Nigeria.
Jax won’t be alone in cheering for Aunt Abby, even if Jax can’t possibly be outdone in cuteness. Wambach is the youngest of seven children and she has TWENTY-TWO nieces and nephews. So 22 young relatives join the rest of the nation in rooting for Wambach and the American team to bring home the 2015 Women’s World Cup. We wonder if any of them know that Aunt Abby is also known as — the way teammate Megan Rapinoe describes her — “that beast in the air”? They may well after Tuesday’s Nigeria game. Look for a Rapinoe cross to that beast for a header into the back of the net.
