Strapped in her seat ready for take-off, Karen Momsen-Evers was returning home to Milwaukee after a girls trip in New Orleans when she received a text from her husband announcing he was about to kill himself. “No, no,” she texted back but “yes, because I have to,” he replied. Appropriately panicked, Momsen-Evers called for the male flight attendant, holding up her phone so he could read the texts and begging for permission to call her husband. Permission denied, the attendant commanded her to return the phone to airplane mode. Waiting for the plane to be airborne, she begged a female flight attendant to make an emergency call from the cockpit. The pilot cannot be disturbed, she was told according to Fox News, but would a drink help?
It’s unknown whether she accepted the drink or whether she was offered a refill as she sobbed through the two-hour flight to Milwaukee airport where the police were waiting with a news update: her husband Andy had made good on his texted threat. She was now a widow.
