When Dave Letterman returned to the Late Show after heart surgery in 2000, the Foo Fighters stepped onto the Late Show stage and rocked a poignant version of “Everlong.” (see below) Back then, Letterman introduced it by saying “Ladies and gentlemen, my favorite band playing my favorite song, Foo Fighters.” The two Daves — Letterman and Foo Fighters leader Dave Grohl — have a strong connection.
So for Letterman’s last show, Foo Fighters reprised “Everlong”. The enduring lyric includes the lines: “If everything could ever feel this real forever / If anything could ever be this good again.” And then Dave Letterman was suddenly retired. Both performances below.
