In September 2014, Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps was arrested for DUI. When he got out of rehab he proposed to his girlfriend, former Miss California Nicole Johnson. Now he’s looking forward to his first races in seven months. He’s entered in a meet this week in Phoenix. Phelps said: “I of course would like to show everybody in the world that I am in a different place and I am much better than I ever have been.”
Right before the DUI Phelps qualified for the Worlds Championships (this July in Russia), but as part of USA Swimming’s punishment he agreed not to compete. “I do accept the decision USA Swimming made back early in the fall,” Phelps said. There was talk that he might be reinstated. “Hopefully, I’ll look forward to rejoining my team-mates next summer, I guess leading into Rio.”
